Introduction to Breathing Room

Sep 23, 2023 | 🌔

“Breathing Room” is a small, intimate gathering designed to support conscious transformation and personal growth. Centered around evidence-based practices such as breathwork, silent meditation, and facilitated discussion, Breathing Room provides a safe and supportive environment for developing self-awareness and emotional intelligence, regulating the nervous system, and fostering interpersonal connection.

As an experimental spiritual community, our aim is to generate transformative spaciousness– a quality of open-hearted, courageous encounter with others and with our true selves. More important to us than the outward forms (what we do) are the interior states (how we are). Said in another way, the container is less important than that which fills it. We believe that a room of people gathering with intention, open-hearts, courage, and a growth mindset can literally change the course of a planet or a nation, and certainly a community or individual.

Breathing Room values accessibility, inclusivity, simplicity, and courage. We welcome participants from all backgrounds and experiences. Whether you're an experienced meditator or a newcomer, these practices provide opportunities for meaningful engagement for people at any level. They have been chosen for their simplicity, accessibility, and effectiveness. Participation is always “challenge by choice.” Many participants will identify as Christian, but many will not. We are explicitly non-dogmatic, meaning that we respect the multiplicity of perspectives, identities, and belief systems that we hold. We explicitly welcome and affirm BIPOC and LGBTQ+ voices.

Breathing Room offers a unique third space, where assumptions are challenged, unconditional positive regard is the norm, and our truest selves are allowed to breathe. Sessions are led by experienced facilitators with expertise in psychology, religion, and a variety of contemplative practices. With a focus on embodied practices and experiential learning, our approach to conscious transformation is grounded in evidence-based research and informed by the wisdom of diverse spiritual traditions.

While this is subject to change, the initial planned format is this:

  • 10-minute opening
  • 10-minute guided breathwork session
  • 15-minute silent sit
  • 15-minute presentation
  • 30-minute facilitated conversation
